Origin:
Thuringia
and Saxony, in Germany. Neumeister (1837) described both muffed and
clean-legged varieties.
Description:
A German Toy pigeon which has a relationship with the Swallow, the Spot, and
the Priest.
Size:
Small, average weight about 380 to 400 grams.
Ornaments:
It is bred wide-muffed, medium-muffed, and clean-legged. The muffed variety is
said to be the older. It is bred plain-headed, shell-crested, and
double-crested. This latter has a shell crest and beak crest, said to have been
derived from an outcross to the Bernburg Trumpeter.
Colors:
The feathers of the body are all white save for the wing secondary’s and
coverts. The name is derived from the colored shield. It is bred today in
black, blue, red, and yellow with white bars; laced, or marbled. The eyes are
dark.
Comment:
Though some are bred, the Shield has never been popular in the United States.
It is seldom exhibited.
Seven
steps must follows for Pigeon growing:
The requirements for pigeon breeding are
simple, but they must be followed to be successful. There should be no relaxing
or neglect at any time, for it is much easier to prevent trouble than to
eliminate disease, parasites or vermin once these have occurred.
1. A dry house
with the inside protected from rain or snow.
2. Separate
houses for mated pairs and odd birds.
3. A flypen, if
the breed requires one that dries out easily.
4. A suitable feed ration protected from
contamination.
5. A suitable
mineral ration protected from contamination.
6. Water suitable
for human consumption protected from contamination.
7. Suitable
nesting materials.
If any one of the seven is neglected,
trouble of some sort will eventually occur.
