Pigeon Origin Description Size Ornaments Colors Comment Caring and Pictures
gallery Information.
Origin: France. This is
the French version of the original Middle Eastern Bagdad. More than 200 years
ago France had six or more varieties of Bagdads, which probably arose from
various crosses with other French breeds. Today, all but the present type of
Bagdad seem to have disappeared.
Description: This Bagdad is
also a long bird with hard, tight feathers. As its picture shows, it has long
legs and an exceedingly long neck. Its head, eye cares, and beak wattles are
more refined than those of its English and Moravian cousins; its tail is
carried horizontally; its eyes are pearl, except in whites, where they are dark.
Size: Large. Standard
weights of La Societe Nationale de Colombirulture, 1964, are 700 to 900 grams
(25 to 3 ounces).
Ornaments: It is plain-headed
and clean-legged. It has no ornaments.
Colors: Selfs in black,
red, yellow, and white; blue, checkered and grizzled.
Comment: lt is very
rare, with but a few specimens in the United States, mostly in California.
Seven steps must
follows for Pigeon growing:
The
requirements for pigeon breeding are simple, but they must be followed to be
successful. There should be no relaxing or neglect at any time, for it is much
easier to prevent trouble than to eliminate disease, parasites or vermin once
these have occurred. A dry house with the inside protected from rain or snow.
1.
Separate houses for mated pairs and odd birds.
2.
A flypen, if the breed requires one that dries out easily.
3.
A suitable feed ration protected from contamination.
4.
A suitable mineral ration protected from contamination.
5.
Water suitable for human consumption protected from contamination.
6.
Suitable nesting materials.
If
any one of the seven is neglected, trouble of some sort will eventually occur.
