Indian Fantail Pigeon with Origin Description Size Ornaments Color Comment caring pictures gallery and Video

Origin: India, said to have been in and around Calcutta, probably centuries ago, though records of its history are waiting. Abul Fazl described it in 1590.

Description: A fancy and exhibition breed which is gaining in popularity in the United States. The standard states that it should stand normally and should not rear back. Its head should be large, with as little movement as possible. Its body should be large and round, with a wide, short back. Its legs are of medium length, and it should stand solidly without tiptoeing.

Size: Small to medium; a sample of ten cocks varied in weight from 15 to 16.5 ounces (average 15.6 ounces), and a sample of ten hens varied in weight from 13.5 to 15.5 ounces (average 14.4 ounces). The Indian Fantail’s standard in the United States provides for a bird that is “quiet large; the larger the better.”

Ornaments: The tail is large and long, upright, and without and oil gland. There is a little or no tremulous neck motion (shaking), and the head is not held back as in other Fantails. It has a peak crest, as in the Archangel (a small shell crest is permitted), and grouse foot feathering. Small muffs are permitted-all toes should be well covered. A count of tail feathers in ten cocks showed a low of 26 and a high of 32; ten hens showed a low of 24 and a high of 33.

Colors: In the United States all colors and patterns are permitted. Common colors in Hongkong are black, blue barred, black mottled, and white. The United States standard provides for variation in eye color, with colors other than pearl preferred.

Comment: Harvey Gatlin, of Tujunga, California, is producing some rare and beautiful combinations of color. This type of Fantail has been spread widely from India and has numerous admirers. In the United States the Indian Fantail Club of America has been recently organized by its breeders (Amer. Pigeon Journal, June 1964, Page 233) and has over 50 paid-up members.

Seven steps must follows for Pigeon growing:
The requirements for pigeon breeding are simple, but they must be followed to be successful. There should be no relaxing or neglect at any time, for it is much easier to prevent trouble than to eliminate disease, parasites or vermin once these have occurred.

1.    A dry house with the inside protected from rain or snow.
2.    Separate houses for mated pairs and odd birds.
3.    A flypen, if the breed requires one that dries out easily.
4.     A suitable feed ration protected from contamination.
5.    A suitable mineral ration protected from contamination.
6.    Water suitable for human consumption protected from contamination.
7.    Suitable nesting materials.
If any one of the seven is neglected, trouble of some sort will eventually occur.
