Origin: The United States. A new breed first recognized by the National Pigeon Association Convention in January, 1957. The Lenardo was originated by Ernest Lenardon of Tucson, Arizona, in 1947. He first crossed Ice pigeons and Jacobins. He saved the youngsters with an asymmetrical (one-sided) crest. These were out crossed to the English Trumpeter, each time retaining only those birds with a right-side crest-mane.

Description: The Lenardo is bred for its oddity of crest-mane and for exhibition.

Size: It is similar in size and station to the English Trumpeter. The tail is carried barely off the ground. Cocks average 17 to 19 ounces, hens 12 to 14 ounces.

Ornaments: The unusual crest and mane, the hallmark of the breed. The crest does not rise above the head but off the back of the head, curving forward on the right side only. It is grouse-legged with one and one-half inch muffs.

Colors: Selfs in all colors, grizzled and splashed.

Comment: This breed is an interesting example of an asymmetrical character which is rarity in nature.

The requirements for pigeon breeding are simple, but they must be followed to be successful. There should be no relaxing or neglect at any time, for it is much easier to prevent trouble than to eliminate disease, parasites or vermin once these have occurred.

1. A dry house with the inside protected from rain or snow.
2. Separate houses for mated pairs and odd birds.
3. A flypen, if the breed requires one that dries out easily.
4. A suitable feed ration protected from contamination.
5. A suitable mineral ration protected from contamination.
6. Water suitable for human consumption protected from contamination.
7. Suitable nesting materials.

If any one of the seven is neglected, trouble of some sort will eventually occur.
