Saxon Swallow Pigeon with Origin Description Size Ornaments Color Comment Pictures and Video

Origin: Saxony, Germany.

Description: And exhibition breed and German Toy. It is said by some writers to have been produced from the Fairy Swallow.

Size: Small, a little shorter and broader than the Nuremberg Swallow. Average weight about 360 to 380 grams.

Ornaments: Shell-crested and large muffs. The muffs are heavier than those of the Nuremberg Swallow, but not so large as those of the Fairy. It has no great quills.

Colors: Spread in black, blue, red, yellow and silver; white barred and laced. Plumage all white with colored cap (full head) and wings. Upper beak dark, lower beak light.

Comment: This Swallow is definitely known to have been in the United States since 1868. It has never been widely bred, but has always had a devoted following.

The requirements for pigeon breeding are simple, but they must be followed to be successful.

There should be no relaxing or neglect at any time, for it is much easier to prevent trouble than to eliminate disease, parasites or vermin once these have occurred.

1. A dry house with the inside protected from rain or snow.
2. Separate houses for mated pairs and odd birds.
3. A flypen, if the breed requires one that dries out easily.
4. A suitable feed ration protected from contamination.
5. A suitable mineral ration protected from contamination.
6. Water suitable for human consumption protected from contamination.
7. Suitable nesting materials.

If any one of the seven is neglected, trouble of some sort will eventually occur.
