Spanish Gabacho Runt Pigeon with Origin Description Size Ornaments Color Comment and Pictures

Origin: Spain, though date of origin is uncertain. Brage (pers. com.)   says the name Gabacho comes from the Catalonian Gabaix, which means “coming from the region of the Gabas River in the Pyrenees.” Brage says it was shown at the Madrid Agricultural Exposition of 1857 by the Agricultural Community of Albacete (Spain) and that it was created from crosses of a large Spanish Runt with a crested Mondain.

Description: A utility breed with large head

and neck and very broad, well-rounded breast. Its body is strong and wide. Its wings are of medium length, with flights carried on the tail.

Size: Large average weight 800 to 900 grams.

Ornaments: It is always crested. It exists with clean legs, slightly grouse legs and with heavy muffs.

Colors: It occurs in all colors, especially splashed  and pied, since the most important factor in size. Its eye is either red or orange, with dark eye in white birds.

Comment: The Gabacho, Brage says, in spite of large size , is a fairly good breeder, probably due to the constant infusion of new blood through matings with any other large-sized pigeon. The breed is rare in the United States, if it occurs at all.

Seven steps must follows for Pigeon growing:
The requirements for pigeon breeding are simple, but they must be followed to be successful.

There should be no relaxing or neglect at any time, for it is much easier to prevent trouble than to eliminate disease, parasites or vermin once these have occurred.

1.    A dry house with the inside protected from rain or snow.
2.    Separate houses for mated pairs and odd birds.
3.    A flypen, if the breed requires one that dries out easily.
4.     A suitable feed ration protected from contamination.
5.    A suitable mineral ration protected from contamination.
6.    Water suitable for human consumption protected from contamination.
7.    Suitable nesting materials.
If any one of the seven is neglected, trouble of some sort will eventually occur.
